One question I hear from aspiring voice actors all the time is whether they need to be actors in order to succeed in voice over.
Many are intimidated by the acting piece.
So let me put your mind at ease: Most of the students I work with are not actors at all.
They’ve never been on stage. They’ve never taken an acting class. And the idea of Improv (a type of acting) can sound downright scary.
And yet…
Improv is one of the most important skills a voice actor can have.
The truth is, voice actors who consistently book good work rely on Improv skills every day.
They know how to stay present in the moment. They can take direction and pivot instantly. They bring spontaneity and life to every read.
That’s Improv in action…and it’s a skill you can learn.
You don’t need to join an Improv troupe or perform on stage. The kind of Improv training voice actors need is much simpler than that.
But it does need to be taught the right way.
You need exercises and techniques designed for the sound booth, not the stage.
